For Immediate Release
Scott Nolan promises a jumpin’ good time at Thunder Bay show
Concert date set for Wednesday August 3
(June 21, 2011 – Winnipeg, MB) Thunder Bay music fans will enjoy a real treat when Winnipeg’s Scott Nolan plays his infectious form of country, rock ‘n blues at The Apollo (239 Red River Road) on Wednesday August 3, 2011.
What: Roots-rocker Scott Nolan with special guest Chris Carmichael
When: 9 p.m., Wednesday August 3, 2011 (Doors open at 8 p.m.)
Where: The Apollo Bar & Restaurant, 225 Red River Road, Thunder Bay, ON
Admission: $10 cover charge at the door
Armed with a guitar and harmonica, and joined by drummer/singer Joanna Miller, Nolan will showcase his tunes about life on the road, good friends, “bad livers” and broken hearts. His speak-easy form of songwriting has earned Nolan two Western Canadian Music Awards nominations (Best Songwriter and Best Roots Album), and an honourable mention at the 2011 International Songwriting Competition (ISC).
Fellow Winnipeg and well-known alt-rocker Chris Carmichael will open the show – which Nolan says is never formulaic or predictable. “Every night there’s a real freewheeling aspect. I don’t go by a set list, so every evening is pretty unique. The room can very often command the kind of show.”
Nolan’s Thunder Bay appearance follows the release of his fourth recording, Montgomery Eldorado (Transistor 66 Records). The CD is full of Scott’s trademark confessional tunes that, in the past, have become Canadian campus radio staples. Scott achieved #1 status on the national Folk-Roots-Blues charts and even had one of his songs covered by well-known Texas country musician, Hayes Carll.
Songs that have been resonating with live audiences include “You Rock, We Roll” – an up-tempo ditty written in memory of Nolan’s late friend, Winnipeg business owner and musician Ernie Blackburn. Ernie was an incredible source of support for Nolan, pushing him forward in his career. “You Rock, We Roll” was the motto of Ernie’s company, Ernie’s Backline Services. The song gives Nolan a chance to capture the spirit of his friend.
“Drive Day” is another popular song, an homage to the late Canadian folk singer Willie P. Bennett. Nolan wrote the song on the road as he was traveling through Kansas en route to Canada in the pouring rain. Nolan had just heard the news Bennett had a heart attack, and was 16 miles from Wichita when the song literally poured out of him. Bennett’s impact on Nolan is tangible: “He had almost like a medicine man type spirit to him – no airs,” says Nolan. “He left every audience he came across better than he found them.”
Exactly the sort of impact Nolan hopes to have in his live shows.
