Hinkson’s new CD, One Beside Two, is his third recording. The CD reflects on his recent experience of loss, struggle and recovery. Take the title track, for instance. “It took 2.5 years and several setbacks and difficulties to get my son here on this earth. One Beside Two is about that experience. It starts off with my trepidation of picturing myself as a father, moving to the feeling of dissonance one has when biologically, your body betrays you. It ends with a sentiment on how such a lengthy struggle could inadvertently divide the couple involved. It’s a very painful and sad tune, but it has amazing feel and is my favorite on the album. I’m very proud of this song,” says Hinkson.
Another favourite of Hinkson’s is his first single, Simpleton. “It denotes the struggles between realizing as an adult in your early 30s that you weren’t who you thought you’d become. It’s about how there’s this inner us, a simpleton, that believes we are the same, youthful soul, with the best intentions - but the world may not see us this way all the time, if at all.”
The vision for the CD progressed into something slightly different throughout the recording process. “One Beside Two morphed into something it wasn't supposed to be, which is often the case with my records.” Originally, Hinkson set out to record an all-acoustic album - just an acoustic guitar and vocals in a single performance with no overdubs. However, what he ended up with was a rich production of alternative-rock tunes featuring half new and old material. The result is an organic sounding record, highlighting Hinkson's voice and writing abilities.
As for the CD release party – Scott Hinkson fans will get both acoustic and plugged-in rock versions of his songs. “I’m playing a solo acoustic set and a full band electric set for the first time. I’m really looking forward to the show and hope to create a comfortable and entertaining vibe surrounding the night.”
