Spicy Latin Grooves Heat up the Beat Niq on May Long Weekend
Calgary’s “Jazz Central” gets hot, hot, hot!
(May 5, 2010 - Calgary, AB) Pulsating Latin rhythms will take over Calgary’s venerable Beat Niq Jazz & Social Club on May 21 and 22, 2010, as some of the province’s most sensational musicians join forces for a special May long weekend showcase.
The show is called Origins: Latin Rhythms - and promises to be a spectacle of talent.

When: 9 p.m. on May 21 and 22, 2010 (doors open at 8 p.m.)
Where: Beat Niq Jazz & Social Club (811 1st St SW, Calgary)

Co-led by Jim Brenan, Rubim de Toledo and Mark DeJong, Origins: Latin Rhythms is a 10-piece band that explodes off the stage with energy, palpitating rhythms and creative interaction. The collective features many of western Canada's top performing musicians.
“The show will feature mostly original music with primarily a Latin influence. There will be lots of percussion, lots of Latin beats and some intricate horn arranging,” explains co-organizer Mark DeJong.

About the Players:
Jim Brenan (sax)
Jim Brenan established himself as a top-notch performer and educator in the Canadian jazz community before accepting the position of Coordinator of Jazz Studies at The School of Creative and Performing Arts at the University of Auckland. His time was well spent in the south pacific having performed and recorded with new Zealands most talented Jazz musicians. After completing two years in new Zealand Jim decided to return to Canada and accept the position of coordinator of credit music at Mount Royal College in Calgary, Alberta.
Mark DeJong (sax)
Mark DeJong is not only one of Canada’s finest tenor sax players, his latest recording, The Unknown (released on Calgary’s Chronograph Records), was nominated for Jazz Album of the Year at the 2009 Western Canadian Music Awards. DeJong graduated from Rutgers University (New Jersey) with a master’s degree in Jazz Studies. He is a former artistic director of the Saskatoon Jazz Society and taught jazz studies at the University of Saskatoon, up until his recent relocation to Alberta.
Jim Murray (trumpet)
Jim’s musical career has seen him play with a number of trumpet greats including Doc Severinsen , Wayne Bergeron , Bobby Shew , Allen Vizzutti , Chris Jaudes , Andrea Tofanelli , Jens Lindemann , Dominic Spera , Gary Guthman , Adam Rapa , Igrid Jensen , Sean Jones , Chase Sanborn, and Wycliffe Gordon. Jim has been a featured performer in various Calgary bands/shows, including The Temptations , Jann Arden , Petula Clark, The Full Monty , and Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra POPS shows. Jim is a regular on lead trumpet with one of Canada’s top big bands, The Prime Time Big Band under the direction of David Jones
Doug Berner (trumpet)
Born and raised in Edmonton, Doug has been an active part of the musical community since his mid-teens. He studied trumpet and jazz performance at Grant MacEwan College in Edmonton and Moorehead State University in Kentucky. Doug has been privileged to perform with many great musicians, including Peabo Bryson, Aaron Neville, and the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra, and has traveled widely working as a Bandmaster for Princess Cruises and as Musical Director aboard Cunard's Queen Mary 2. Currently Doug resides in Wetaskiwin, Alberta, and can be found performing and teaching throughout western Canada.
Craig Brenan (trombone)
Trombonist, composer and educator Craig Brenan has been an active performer throughout Canada. A graduate of the New England Conservatory where he received his Master's degree in Jazz Performance, Craig has had the opportunity to work and study with George Russell, Slide Hampton, Bob Brookmeyer, Danilo Perez, George Garzone, Jerry Bergonzi and Marty Ehrlich.
Carsten Rubeling (trombone)
Carsten Rubeling was born in Alberta and studied in Toronto under Alistair Kay at Humber College. He has performed internationally and has shared the stage with jazz icons such as Michael Brecker and Dave Holland. Carsten is a versatile trombonist who feels equally comfortable in jazz, latin and pop settings. In 2008 Carsten moved to Calgary where he is on faculty at Mount Royal University.
Raul Tabera (drums)
Born in Matanzas, Cuba, Raul Gomez Tabera began his artistic career at the age of 8 years old, as a member of the children’s group Ismaelillo and Edad de oro from Matanzas. Raul studied at the Provincial School of Art of Matanzas, the National School of Art and the School for Professional Musicians of Matanzas.
His professional career began in the Concert Band of Matanzas (la Banda de Conciertos de Matanzas) as a solo percussionist; and alternated playing with the Symphony of Matanzas in Cuba. After persistant touring, Raul eventually relocated to Canada, and established himself in the Calgary jazz scene, where he also plays with noted group, Bomba.
Rubim de Toledo (bass)
A Canadian of Brazilian descent, Rubim combines the influences of his cultural heritage, his passion for Cuban music, and his dedication to the jazz tradition to create a refreshing sound and to bring a rhythmic and conceptual depth to his bass playing. This keeps him a highly in- demand sideman for projects in any style and has also allowed him to nurture a fertile career as a bandleader. Rubim has recorded three solo CDs to date: “Charcoal and Crimson”, a Nu-Jazz experiment; “Seu Swing”, a World-Jazz venture; and acoustic jazz recording, The River.
Egor Ukoloff (piano)
Originally from Russia Egor Ukoloff has Masters in Jazz from Rostov-on-Don Music College and Conservatory. Egor moved to Canada in 1990 where he attended Jazz workshops at the Banff Centre. Following an 8 year stint as a cocktail pianist at the Banff Springs hotel Egor moved to Calgary where he plays with numerous groups including the Prime Time Big Band, Yomozo and others for which he's done arrangements and wrote originals for their self-titled début CD. Egor has also performed on the Seabourn and Princess cruise line as a bandmaster and also in hotels in Asia.
Luis elpana Tovar (percussion)
Luis is a founding member of The Pana Band, formed in April 2009. They have already performed in many festivals around Alberta, Canada including The Sun & Salsa and Calgary Jazz Festival. In 2009's Expo Latino, The Pana Band was a featured act following international singer Huey Dunbar (Former lead singer of DLG). Under musical director Oliver Miguel, The Pana Band continues to perform their modern salsa very regularly for private and public events.
