Calgary Pro Musica Society presents the Tafelmusik Baroque Orchestra on January 30 and 31
(Calgary, Alberta – January 10, 2011) Armed with oboes, violas, violoncellos and other 16th to 18th century instruments, the world-renowned Tafelmusik Baroque Orchestra with Music Director Jeanne Lamon is about to converge upon Calgary. The 15-member, Juno Award-winning ensemble will perform two concerts at the University of Calgary’s Rozsa Centre on January 30 and 31, 2011.
The Orchestra plays authentic period instruments which are faithful recreations of instruments played 300 to 400 years ago. The Orchestra has performed with them in 30 countries including Mexico, Germany, Israel and China. Now Calgarians will get a chance to hear Tafelmusik Baroque Orchestra’s exquisite interpretations of baroque-era music.

Based in Toronto, the Tafelmusik Baroque Orchestra is a group of remarkably talented, enthusiastic and dynamic permanent members, each of whom is a specialist in historical performance practice. Tafelmusik (or "table music" in German) is a term used since the mid-16th century for music played at feasts and banquets.

Classical music fans will also appreciate a special FREE Sunday afternoon workshop presentation by Jeanne Lamon, Music Director of Tafelmusik on Jan. 30 from 3 to 5 p.m. Lamon will work with the Calgary Youth Orchestra during the Calgary Pro Musica Society’s Talmon Hertz Legacy Series at the Mount Royal Conservatory’s Leacock Theatre.

- Brentano String Quartet with Eric Ruske, French Horn – The first Quartet-in-Residence at Princeton University meets one of America’s top horn soloists. The Quartet is named for Antonie Brentano, whom many scholars consider to be Beethoven's "Immortal Beloved", the intended recipient of his famous love confession. - Young Artists Development Program – Come hear Calgary’s finest young talent showcased in this special event concert. Three students have been selected to showcase: cellist Caroline Kim who began playing cello at the age of eight in Korea, harpist Scott Ross-Molyneux, and pianist Gianetta Baril. The Young Artists Development Program is intended to discover, nurture and promote young Calgary musicians. Eckhardt-Gramatté Hall, Rozsa Centre, University of Calgary.
